Cashing in on mobile phones

I’ve seen lots of adverts for companies offering money for old mobile phones. How does this work?

CONSUMER EXPERT TEENA LYONS SAYS:

It’s estimated that there are up to 70 million unused mobiles hidden away in our homes. It makes sense to turn them into cash, but with dozens of websites offering great deals you do need to take care not to get caught out by the few unscrupulous ones.

On the website you enter the make and model of your phone, a note of its condition and a few personal details. The company then provides a quote and, if you accept, you send them your phone in a freepost envelope. The money will be paid into your bank account a few days later.

There have been some reports of companies offering a reduced price when they receive the phone, blaming ‘wear and tear’. If you’re convinced the phone was in perfect condition, ask for it back and try elsewhere. Also, there have been some scams where no money has been received at all.

Make sure you read online reviews and check out consumer forums – you’ll soon work out which companies to avoid.
